Peking University was set up in 1989, originally named “Capital Grand School”, which was the first comprehensive state-run university in China, as well as the highest education executive organ in China at that time. It was changed to the present name in 1912 after the 1911 Revolution. Peking University was where the “May 4th Movement” took place. It was also the center of China’s modern new culture movement. The university has made irreplaceable contributions to national rejuvenation, liberation, national construction, social civilization development and progress. The university possesses the traditional spirit of patriotism, progress, democracy, science and the diligent, realistic, strict, creative style of learning. In early 1938, Peking University was merged into the state-run Southwest Associated University and moved to Kunming. In October 1946 after the victory of the war against Japan, Peking University returned to the original site and resumed classes.

In 1952 after the adjustment of the departments of university of the country, it became a comprehensive university mainly focusing on research, basic teaching of literature, science & technology. The University consists of 30 colleges and 12 departments with 93 specialties for undergraduates, 2 specialties for the second bachelor’s degree, 199 specialties for master’s degree candidates and 173 specialties for doctoral degree candidates. It ranks the first in the country in having the most professors. PhD tutors, academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and national key laboratories, It has educated a lot of talented students for the country. On May 4th, 1998, its century anniversary was celebrated. Its aim is to rank among the world’s best university at the beginning of this century. On April 3rd, 2000, Beijing Medical University was merged into the Peking University.
