Shangri-La is a location invented by James Hilton. However, you can find it in reality. Zhongdian, situated over 4500 meters above sea-level on the old Tibetan border in China, has managed to avoid the perils of mass tourism and successfully clung on to its unique old border town atmosphere. It still keeps unique customs and traditions, attracting many independent travelers.
