Trip Highlights - Attractions involved: Hakka Tulou, also known as Fujian Tulou, is a unique and mysterious Chinese rural architecture with a thick earth wall enclosure found only in the mountainous areas in southwestern Fujian province bordering Guangdong in South China. Tulou is usually an enclosed building, mostly square or circular in configuration, with a very thick earth wall which is up to six feet thick and wooden frameworks, from three to five stories high, housing up to 80 families. Tour Itinerary: (Lunch)
Today you will be picked up from your hotel and take a car ride to Yongding district, a rural area to the west of Xiamen. Here, you will visit Hong Keng Village, famous for its Tulous, circular, square and rectangular houses. The round Hakka Tulous were built without nails, using mud bricks and wood. They were built according to a Chinese "Ba Gua" method of round on the outside, octagonal on the inside. After this visit, you will be driven back to your hotel in Xiamen. (Service End)

Tulou
Tulou or "earthen building", is a traditional communal residence in the Fujian province of Southern China, usually of a circular configuration surrounding a central shrine. These vernacular structures were occupied by clan groups. Although most tulou were of earthen construction, the definition "tulou" is a broadly descriptive label for a building type and does not indicate construction type. Some were constructed of cut granite or had substantial walls of fired brick. Most large-scale tulou seen today were built of a composite of earth, sand, and lime known as sanhetu rather than just earth.
