Trip Highlights - Attraction in Zhangye involved: Giant Buddha Temple, Wooden Pagoda Temple. Zhangye is located in far western Gansu province, in the center of the Hexi Corrido, sharing the borderlines with Inner Mongolia on its north and Qinghai province on its south. The area was the frontier for much of China's history, forming a corridor to the Central Asian portion of the empire. Zhangye used to be a commercial port on the Silk Road and one of the biggest international trade markets in the country, which left many historical attractions. This morning, our warm-hearted local guide will meet you at the lobby of your hotel. Then, you will be driven to the attractions. First you visit the Giant Buddha Temple, which is the largest architectural relic in Gansu Province of the Western Xia (1038-1227) period. Then, you will be taken to a restaurant for your lunch and have a break. The next destination is the Wooden Pagoda Temple, which is regarded as one of Zhangye City's 'Five Elements' Pagodas. Attraction Description
Giant Buddha Temple
The Giant Buddha Temple is the largest architectural relic in Gansu Province of the Western Xia (1038-1227) period, located in the southwest corner of Zhangye in Gansu Province. China's largest reclining Buddha is well preserved in this temple. The Giant Buddha Temple was built in 1098 to house the Buddha. In its 900 years the temple was restored many times during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Wooden Pagoda Temple
The present Wooden Pagoda is located in the south street of Zhangye County Government, regarded as one of Zhangye City's 'Five Elements' Pagodas. (Metal, wood, water, fire and earth are the 'five elements' in ancient Chinese philosophy and fortune-telling).The Wooden Pagoda Temple was built in early 557-588 A.D. of the Northern Zhou Dynasty.
