Brunei, officially the State of Brunei Darussalam or the Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace, is a country located on the north coast of the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia. Brunei regained its independence from the United Kingdom on 1 January 1984 and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The culture of Brunei is predominantly Malay (reflecting its ethnicity), with heavy influences from Islam, but is seen as more conservative than Malaysia. The capital city is Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei has a total area of 5765 km² with a population of about 400,000 (2009). It developed diplomatic relation with China on September 30, 1991. The national day of Brunei is Febrary 23rd.
