Bulgaria, officially the Republic of Bulgaria, is a country in the Balkans in south-eastern Europe. With a territory of 110,994 km², Bulgaria ranks as the third largest state in Southeast Europe. It has a population of 1.25 million (December 2008). The captial of Bulgaria is Sofia. The country has an industrialised, open free market economy, with a large, moderately advanced private sector and a number of strategic state-owned enterprises. A number of ancient civilizations, most notably the Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Slavs, and Bulgars, have left their mark on the culture, history and heritage of Bulgaria. It developed diplomatic relation with China on Octerber 4, 1949. The national day of Bulgaria is July 3rd.
