Burundi, with the area of just under 28,000 km², is a tiny little nation of soaring mountains and languid lakeside communities. Although the country is landlocked, much of the southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika. Burundi is one of the poorest countries on the planet, which is in part owing to its landlocked geography, poor legal system, lack of access to education, and the proliferation of HIV/AIDS. China first established the diplomatic relations with Burundi in 1963; however, in 1965 Burundi ended the relation unilaterally. Since they rebuilt it in 1972, the friendship and cooperation between China and Burundi has been developing normally.
