Kazakhstan lies in the north of the central Asian and is bounded by China in the east. With an area of 2.7 million square kilometers, Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country and the largest landlocked country in the world. Kazakhstan declared itself an independent country on December 16, 1991, the last Soviet republic to do so. Since independence, Kazakhstan has pursued a balanced foreign policy and worked to develop its economy, especially its hydrocarbon industry. It is now considered to be the dominant state in Central Asia. China and Kazakhstan established diplomatic relations on in 1992, right after its independence.
