Republic of Madagascar is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. The main island, also called Madagascar, is the fourth-largest island in the world. Madagascar's long isolation from the neighboring continents has resulted in a unique mix of plants and animals, many found nowhere else in the world; some ecologists refer to Madagascar as the "eighth continent". Agriculture, including fishing and forestry, is a mainstay of the economy. Madagascar is the world's largest producer and exporter of vanilla which has historically been of particular importance. It exports the vanilla involved in Coca-cola. China established the diplomatic relations with Madagascar in 1972.
