Maldives, is an island country in the Indian Ocean formed by a double chain of twenty-six atolls stretching in a north-south direction off India's Lakshadweep islands, between Minicoy Island and Chagos Archipelago. Its capital and largest city is Malé. Tourism occupied a large part in its economy. Politics in the Maldives takes place in the framework of a presidential republic, whereby the President is the head of government. It has a total area of 298km² with a population of about 396,334 (2009 estimate). It developed diplomatic relation with China on October 14, 1972. The national day is July 26th.
