Sri Lanka, officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, is an island country in South Asia, located about 31 kilometres off the southern coast of India. It is home to around twenty million people, about 14% of whom live on less than $1.25 per day. Its capital city is Colombo. In the 19th and 20th Centuries, Sri Lanka became a plantation economy, famous for its production and export of cinnamon, rubber and Ceylon tea, which remains a trademark national export. The island is the home of two main traditional cultures: the Sinhalese and the Tamil.It has a total area of 65,610 km². Sri Lanka developed diplomatic relation with China on Febrary 7,1957. The national day is Febrary 4th.
