Uzbekistan is situated in central Asia between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya Rivers, the Aral Sea, and the slopes of the Tien Shan Mountains. It was formerly part of the Soviet Union, and has been an independent republic since December 1991. Uzbekistan is not only one of the larger Central Asian states but also the only Central Asian state to border all the other four. The Uzbek language is the only official state language. Uzbekistan has a wide mix of ethnic groups and cultures, with the Uzbek being the majority group. China and Uzbekistan established diplomatic relations on in 1992. Since then the two countries have been conducting highly effective cooperation in many fields.
