Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It has a total area of 331,690 km² with a population of over 86 million. Its capital city is Ha noi. The Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a single-party state. The central role of the Communist Party was reasserted in all organs of government, politics and society. The Vietnam War, between 1965 and 1975, destroyed much of the country's economy. Upon taking power, the Government created a planned economy for the nation. It culture was deeply influneced by China and India. It developed diplomatic relation with China on Febrary 8, 1979. The national day is September 2nd.
