Taiyuan, located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River in north of China, covers an area of 6,998 square kilometers. It has a long history and in ancient times was an important military town. Taiyuan is now a major industrial city in northern China, close to major iron and coal reserves. As the city is the provincial transportation hub, Taiyuan benefits from convenient public transport systems. Accommodation facilities have become more and more advanced over recent years which welcome visitors from home and abroad to travel.
Many visitors enjoy the city for its mild weather, long daylight hours and remarkable history. Taiyuan has played a role in most of China’s most colourful historical episodes, and its streets are pitted with fascinating mementoes of this past. The folk cultural activities in Taiyuan are rich and colorful. The Jin opera is a typical one among them. Shanxi noodles are highly reputed all over China, as well as the local vinegar. Other local delicacies are the Tou Nao, Sausages, the Steamed Dumpling and Mutton Soup. To accompany these wholesome foods there are Fen Wine and Zhuye Qing Wine. So travel in Taiyuan, can not only make your eye but also your stomack satisfied.
Throughout history, Taiyuan has been called the "town of beautiful landscapes" for its abundant travel attractions and cultural relics. Like much of the cities and towns in this region, Taiyuan is heavily polluted, by coal particles, from the abundant coal reserves, and the smog from various factories and homes. The ancient architecture and temples that once filled the town are now hard to come across, although there are a few sights out of town were these can still be found. These temples remain some of the main highlights of any travel to the city. The Jinci Temple is a fine example of regal Chinese architecture.
