Yichang, situated in the center China and in the middle of the Yangtze River, is another important city in Hubei Province. As a city located in the sub-tropical area, it has the right amount of sunshine and abundant rainfall. The city covers an area of 21,083 square kilometers with the population of around 4 million. Its annual average temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius and the best season to travel is spring and autumn. Numerous famous travel sites and historical spots and historical culture legends are another interesting aspect of Yichang.
The city is also blessed with the rich history which can be traced back to more than 2,000 years. It was the territory in the history of the Chu Kingdom and well developed the Chu culture there. Yichang, 30kms downstream from the Three Gorges Dam, is always taken as one end for Yangtze Cruise. Since the dam's construction, Yichang is used less often for travel upstream due to the obvious flooding of the gorges and the dam itself. The dam is the main travel attraction to Yichang and its dimensions are awesome. It is about 200m high and two kilometers long.
Apart from the Three Gorges, the abundant travel resources of Yichang are also attractive. Mountains, waterfalls, caves, stone forests and pools form picturesque scenes. Besides the magnificent scenery, Yichang is famous for its local products: oranges, persimmons, Chinese gooseberries, tea, etc. They are sold in the streets and lanes and delight visitors with their excellent flavor.
