What to Pack

Packing for a trip like China can be daunting. It's good to know what you need to take, what you can leave behind and what you can find once you're there - leaving you plenty of room for the treasure you'll want to bring home with you. China is a shopper’s paradise. But it's a shame to spend time trying to pick up things you forgot on your packing list rather than in the markets cruising for treasure.
Here's a list of items that you may want to bring with you because you won't be able to find them, or the brands will be limited, in China. Especially if you're going to be off the beaten track, not spending much time in big cities with big expat communities such as Beijing or Shanghai, you'll want to make sure you have these items along with you when you come.

1. The passport with all necessary visas and travel authorities.
2. Casual outdoor clothing depending on the time of year that you travel and your destination.
3. 'Carry On' luggage for air travel in China is limited to 2 pieces for first class travelers and one piece for business and economy class travelers.
4. Wallet; Credit cards; Traveler's checks.
5. Airline, Cruise or Train tickets.
6. First-aid kit; Medicine and vitamins.
7. Hat, Sunscreen, lip creams and sunglasses, depending on the season and your destination.
8. A list of e-mail addresses, mailing addresses and telephone numbers will help keep you in touch.
9. Itinerary with confirmation numbers and addresses and phone numbers of the places you'll be staying.
10. Insect repellent. Especially for summer months and for travelers who are visiting rural areas.
11. Do not bring expensive jewelry and watches.
12. Medical records; daily necessities such as bathroom requirements are readily available throughout China and you may wish to save space by purchasing these items while you travel.
