Shanhaiguan Pass Guide

Shanhaiguan Pass , 15 kilometers northeast to Qinhuangdao City , is the east end of the Ming Great Wall and an important strategic pass of Jizhen Town Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty . It gets its name Shanhaiguan ( Mountain , Sea and Pass ) , for it is beside Mount Yan in the north and faces Bohai Sea in the south . As a strategic point , which holds the key passage from North China to Northeast China , it has been contended by military forces in history and thus eams the reputation described in the following lines " There is no other place in the world to be the key of two capitals , It is the No.l pass of the Ten-thousand-1i Great Wall ."

Shanhaiguan Pass consists of a main castle, two supporting castles one in the north and one in the south, and two semicircular protective walls in front of the main castle, the town of Weiyuan and the town of Ninghai.
Today most of these structures are still well preserved, while others, such as the wall of Ninghai, the Calm Sea Tower built on the town wall and the Laolongtou Great Wall, where the Great Wall meets the sea, have been restored. The brick wall of the pass, stuffed with earth, is 14 meters high, seven meters wide and four kilometers in circumference. It is connected with the Great Wall which stretches onto the rolling Yanshan Mountains in the north and into the Bohai Sea in the south with parts and battlements that form a strong and powerful defense system.
The Shanhaiguan Pass Scenic Spot is a famous historic and cultural ancient city as well as summer resort. It features six beauty spots within the area, including Laolongtou (Old Dragon Head), the Temple of Lady Mengjiang, Jiaoshan Mountain, the First Pass under Heaven, Longevity Mountain and Yansai Lake.
