Haikou is easily skipped over by some guide books, because most travelers head straight for the beach resorts near Sanya. Haikou, know as the "Coconut City", is the capital of Hainan Island, 520km (322 miles) southern of Guangzhou, 480km (288 miles) southern of Hong Kong. Haikou is on the west bank of the Nandu River estuary. This river is the longest on the island and the city's name appropriately means "Mouth of the Sea". Haikou is the main port and business center for the island, a tropical city with streets lined with palm trees. This is the political, commercial and transportation center of the province and serves as a convenient stopping point en route to the beaches in the south of the island.

Formerly a treaty port in the late 1800s, it is the transportation hub and center of all government and commercial services. In recent years, the town has developed into another modern Chinese city with large shops and colorful restaurants. Currently, Haikou is the unique city which has been in the list of world healthy cities and it is honored with "China Excellent Traveling City". Here there are modern and convenient public transport facilities and all that is best in a tropical seaside city that is pollution free and that meets the needs of the travellers in a friendly and welcoming way. Haikou has evolved from a simple sightseeing city to an attractive seaside resort and business center.

Though Haikou is not rich in travel resources, it still has a few things worth checking out, among which the major attractions are Wugong Temple, Hairui's Grave, Qiongtai Academy, Ma'anshan Crater Park, Dongzhaigang Red Forest (the "Forest on the Sea" when rising tide), Holiday Beach, Xixiu Beach, Baishamen Beach, Tropical Oceanic World and ribbon pattern park along the west bank. We want to travel Sanya from Haikou. Is there flight flying from Haikou to there?

There is no direct flight from Haikou to Sanya. The route is too short for the airplane. It is about 272km between these two cities. If you want to get started the travel from Haikou, to take train is a good option.
