-Travel to The Presidential Mansion

The Presidential Mansion of the former Presidents Dr. Sun Yat-sen and Mr. Jiang Jie-shi can be found at No. 292 Changjiang Road, Nanjing. The palace appears to be the most famous destination in Nanjing City. On January 1912, Mr. Sun Yat-sen took his oath of office as the first appointed "Interim Grand President" of "the Republic of China" here and the building was used as the Presidential House until the liberation of China by the Chinese Communist Party in 1949. Mr. Jiang Jie-shi was the chairman of Kuomingtang, a ruling political party in China before the Communist rose to power.

Nanjing was the capital of China for a long time, around five Dynasties if memory serves. And, it is indeed a place that experience many important historic events in the history of China. Rulers and residents included Dr Sun Yat-sen, the Japanese, the Rebel-Taiping Heavenly King Hong Xiuquan, the Kuomintang and the People's Liberation Army. Now, the Presidential Mansion is the location of China's Modern History Museum. One can walk through the rooms in the museum, which feature photographs and paintings of significant people from Nanjing's modern history.

In 1949, near the end of the Chinese Civil War, the Communist forces captured Nanjing, Chiang Kai-shek's government fled to Taiwan, and Mao Zedong declared the People's Republic of China with capital in Beijing. The building was then used for government functions. In the late 1980s it was transformed into a museum detailing Chinese modern history. It is now one of the few places in mainland China where the Flag of the Republic of China is publicly displayed.
