The Qiao Compound is an attractive travel site of Pingyao. It is not only known for its grandeur but also for the exquisite craftsmanship, which is reflected in the brick carvings, woodcarvings, and murals. From a bird view, the Compound strangely resembles the double Chinese character, "xi," which means happiness and luck. If you enter through the main gate, you will find yourself in the main hall where at the western end is an ancestral temple of the family. The compound is divided into two sections: the Northern Yard and the Southern Yard. The Northern Yard is divided into three divisions; the Old Yard, the Northwest yard, and the Study Yard while the
Southern Yard is divided into the Southeast Yard, the South Yard, and the New Yard. The roof of every house is connected and the roofs themselves boost 140-plus chimneys. The Compound is grounded in the historical tale of the Qiao Family. The story originated with Qiao Guifa, who started out as an orphan and a servant during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Qiao Guifa rose to stardom with his startup of a business with his friend, Qin. The business revolved around selling fodder, bean sprout, and bean curd, and in a
couple of years flourished as a successful venture. The family fortunes began to decline due to the large amount of money offered to the Qing Army and the exploitation of the Japanese army. In 1985, the local government set up the Folk Art Museum of Qixian County, exhibiting 5,000 objects of folk custom in the compound grounds. Many films were also shot here, among which the most famous being 'Raise the Red Lanterns' featuring Li Gong. Therefore, information and materials on these films are exhibited, too.
