-Travel to The North Mausoleum

As one of the most popular travel spots in Shengyang, the North Tombs is situated amongst the expansive greens and lakes of Beiling Park, near the Shenyang Imperial Palace. The North Tombs (also called Zhao Mausoleum), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Shenyang's most popular historic and cultural attractions. In history, the North Mausoleum was built in 1643 for Emperor Huangtaji and his wife Empress Xiaoduanwen, located on the north of Shenyang, covering an area of 4.5 million square meters. It combines ancient Manchurian and Chinese architectural styles with three main parts and several buildings: Baocheng Town, Dahong Gate, Yueyacheng Town, Daming Pavilion and several others. Inside the mausoleum there are also Steles that are written in five different languages.

Construction of the mausoleum began in 1643 and was finished after eight years. North Tomb, together with Fuling Tomb in Shenyang and Yongling Tomb in Xinbin are called the Three Mausoleums of the strategic pass (referring to the area between the east of Shanhaiguan Pass and the west of Jiayuguan Pass). North Tomb is the largest and most magnificent. It is also one of the best preserved imperial mausoleums of China. All of the people buried here are ancestors of the Qing Dynasty Emerpor Abahai and his wife with the most famous being Huang Taji. He helped his father unify different parts of China and established the Qing regime. After fighting for several years, he became emperor and changed the title of the dynasty from Jin to Great Qing. He later died at the age of 52. The long history of North Tomb as well as its classical architecture attracts thousands of travellers every year.

There are more than 2,000 pines, most of which are over 300 years old. The green pines form magnificent scenery around the palatial palace. Amongst them, the Phoenix Pine, the Spouse Pine and the Tortoise Pine stand out.
