Travel to Yungang Buddihist Caves, you can experience the strong atmosphere of Buddism. Yungang Buddhist Caves are located at Wuzhou Mountain, just west of Datong.Just 16km west of Datong, the monumental Yungang Caves , a set of Buddhist grottoes carved into the side of a sandstone cliff, are a must-to-see programme. These caves stretch for one kilometer across the mountain and are found among the cliffsides. The excavation of the caves took place from 460 AD to 524 AD, the reigns of Emperor Wen Cheng and Xiao Ming. These caves are some of the best in China and were created
by the ethnic groups of the Northern Wei Dynasty. The caves display the tremendous craftsmanship of the artisans during the time period and display a masterpiece of Chinese Buddhist artwork. There are several caves that travelers can enter while walking up and down the stairs that are attached to the side of the cliff. The size of the sculptures found in these caves range from very small to many stories tall. The site is truly spectacular in every sense. Caves worth special attention are No.16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. Upon Tan Yao's
suggestion, five statues of Emperors Taizu, Taizong, Shizu, Gaozong, and Gaozu as Buddha express the religious theme that the Emperor is Buddha. Caves housing these statues are known as the Five Tan Yao Caves, similar in style but not identical. Here's some guide information in your travel of Yungang Buddhist Caves: Address: Wuzhou Mountain,West of Datong County, Shanxi Province.
