-Travel to The White Horse Temple

White Horse Temple, is located about seven miles away from Luoyang City. It is the first Buddhist temple in Chinese history ever since Buddhism came to China. In 258, a royal Kuchean monk, Po-Yen, translated six Buddhist text in to Chinese at the temple, including the important Infinite Life Sutra. In 1175, an inscription on a stone tablet next to Qilun Pagoda-a 35 m (115 ft) tall, multi-eaved square-based tower located to the southeast of the White Horse Temple-stated that a previous fire occurred five decades previously and destroyed the temple and the Sakya Tathagata sarira stupa, a predecessor to the pagoda. The same inscription of 1175 stated that a Jin Dynasty official had the stone Qilun Pagoda erected soon after. The pagoda is built with the design style imitating the square-based pagodas of the Tang Dynasty.

The temple boasts ancient architectures, such as the Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira (great hero) Hall , Hall of thousand Buddhas, Mahavairocana Chamber, Tower of Bell and Drum and so on. Outside of the gate to the temple stand two granite horses carved in the Song Dynasty following the above legend, which look composed but vigorous. The 13-storeyed Qiyun (cloud reaching) Pagoda by the temple, is of classic beauty and in elegant taste, which belongs to the style of cubic shaped, close eaves brick pagodas. To express his thanks to the two monks and their white horse, the emperor ordered the building of a monastery which he named the White Horse Temple during the following year.

During this time, the two monks were busy translating sutras in the temple until they completed the Chinese sutra 'Forty-two Chapter Sutra', which attracted many monks and meant that the temple became a centre for Buddhist activity in China. It is for this reason that the temple is honored as the 'Founder's Home' and the 'Cradle of Buddhism in China'.
