Fayu Temple is the second largest temple on the island (Puji Temple is the largest), According to Travel Guide of Putuoshan, Fuyu is located on the left top of the Baihua hill, close to 1000-pace Beach. Guests can take the cableway or walk up to the top of the hill to visit the Goddess Hall. Fayu Temple is well known as its ancient architecture, delicate wood carvings and inscribed calligraphy by ancient emperors. Its history can reportedly trace back to 1580, during the Ming Dynasty. As a monk, Da Chi, prayed to Guanyin at the Cave of Tidal Sound and envisioned that a large bamboo had washed ashore on the 1000-pace Beach and built a hut on it.

Fayu Temple is now the second largest temple on Putuo Shan. The grounds, sprawling out over the side of Baihua hill, are large and interesting enough to spend a half-day exploring. Huge camphor trees provide a shady relief from the summer sun and amiable monks are happy to have a chat or answer a question. The temple has a land area of 33,000 m2. It comprises 294 halls and rooms, with a building area of 9,300 m2. Along the trend of the mountain from lower to higher are Heavenly Kings Hall, Jade Buddhist Hall, Nine-Dragon Guanyin Hall, Emperor Tablet Hall, Great Grand Hall, and Fangzhang Hall. Putuoshan has been considered to be a holy place of Buddhist worship for a long time.

It is one of the four Buddhist Mountains of China. Others are Wutaishan, E'meishan and Jiuhuashan. Every year, reverent followers migrate to the island to pay respects to Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy. As a result, the island is littered with temples and shrines. Its circumference is only 33 km, but, there are 3000 to 4000 inhabitants of who about 1000 are monks and nuns. The largest buildings are four storeys tall. Most are two storeys and old architecture.
