According to Travel Guide to Putuoshan, Huiji Temple is situated on the peak of Foding Hill, from the temple you can command an excellent view of the rising sun in the morning. Huiji Temple, as the third largest temple on the mountain, has four halls, seven palaces and six attics. It is a maze of immaculate gardens bordered by swaying lanterns. Only the Huiji Temple is worshiped by Buddha Sakyamuni. The temple is also famous for its large collection of ancient brick carvings portraying the Guanyin Buddha.

Huiji Temple is well hidden behind trees and is built much like a Chinese garden house. Differing from the other temples on the island, Huiji Temple mainly worships Sakyamuni (Gautama Buddha) and the main hall is named “Daxiong.” The main hall is covered with a colorful glazed roof which resembles a rainbow under the sunshine to signify that "Buddhist light shines throughout the universe". When you visit this temple, you may to praise the Goddess of Mercy for a better life. In 1793, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, Huiji Temple was enlarged to a bigger temple and under the reign of Emperor Guangxu. It became the third largest temple on the island.

Nowadays, the temple covers an area of 7902.93 square meters. In 1988, the Guanyin Hall was renewed and it became the exhibition hall for 123 stone inscriptions of Guanyin's portraits drawn by painters of Tang, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties in 1991. In 1998, 32 pictures telling stories of Sakyamuni were engraved on a building in the west side.
