One of the must-go place when you travel to Shangdong Province is Qufu. Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius, is situated in the southwest of Shandong Province, about 160km from Jinan. Confucius is the world-renowned Chinese philosopher born in Qufu more than 3,500 years ago. His influence on Chinese society culture lasts until the present day. Qufu has recently been restored to its former glory. It has become a travel attraction rivaling the Great Wall. You can not find any high building in this town, since in order to show respect to Confucius, the local people don't allowe their buildings exceed the height of Dacheng Hall, the main hall of the Temple of Confucius.

People travel here in order to see the places where Confucius lived, studied, and was buried. The most famous attractions in this town are: the Confucian Temple, Confucian Mansion and Confucian Woods,which are called Three Confucians, which are now one of the four extant great architectural complexes in China. Emperors of different dynasties all held grand ceremonies to offer sacrifices to Confucius when they came to Qufu.And these attractions have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1994. Every year from September 26 to October 10 "Qufu International Confucius Culture Festival" is sponsored here to commemorate Confucius.

For the more adventurous travelers, the optimum visiting period would be sometime around Confucius' birthday in late September. This is peak travel period for the town and so finding hotels, either in Qufu or nearby Taishan, as well as fighting the crowds, could well be troublesome. Thanks for asking. I think Qufu, which is prestigious for the hometown of Confucius, is the worthiest one. The Confucius mansion and temple, especially the Confucius Forest is popular. This area is not only the cemetery or tomb. This is the land full of dignity and honor.

I think the Confucius Forest is a great choice. It is the largest and oldest family cemetery. Confucius and his descendants rest amid trees, pavilions and statues there.

Except the Confucian Temple, you can also visit the Confucian Cemetery and the Confucian Family Mansion. These are the most famous cultural relics about Confucius.
