Travel to the Confucius Temple, you can get to know this great thinker and social philosopher in Chinese history and even the world. The Confucius Temple is located in Qufu, the birth place of Confucius, the founder of the Confucian religion. Confucius lived more than 2,500 years ago and his teachings and beliefs have influenced Chinese society throughout Chinese history, including present times. One year after Confucian death, Lu Ai King rebuilt his three old houses into a memorial temple and offered sacrifices to him in person. From then on, the temple

was constantly extended every dynasty. By the 2ndyear (1018) of the Tianyou reign of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), 360 halls, porches and side-rooms had been added to the temple, making it a vast architectural complex similar to an imperial palace in style. The rulers of China used Confucian beliefs as a moral standard and they built the town of Qufu to act like the capital of Confucianism. Thus, there are presently numerous ancient buildings and treasures located in this town. The Temple itself was built in 478 BC and rebuilt several times after that. The buildings inside the temple are laid out symmetrically facing a north/south direction. Inside,

there are 53 gateways and 466 halls, pavilions and shrines. The Confucian Temple, in 1994, was included on UNESCO's List of the World Cultural Heritage. Inside the Confucian Temple there are over 2,000 steles of different dynasties. The characters on them are in various styles, among which the stele inscriptions of the six dynasties from Han to Wei are most famous home and abroad.
