I'm planning a travel in Shanxi with my husband and kids. Arrival and departure city will probably be in Taiyuan by flight. Places I'd like to see include Pingyao, the Shanxi merchant family compounds, and also the Hanging Monastery and Yungang Caves near Datong. I can't quite wrap my brain around all of the logistics, and would love some travel advice. Thanks.

Transportation around Shanxi by bus is probably best. So it might be worth contacting some travel companies, as they could help arrange a car and a guide who will be very helpful for your understanding Shanxi ancient culture. Maybe you can also visit Wutaishan if you have plenty time. Browse this site, I believe I came across some travel products covering all of your desired spots under very good schedule.

I’d like to visit Mt Wutai and I want to know which part of it is the most fantastic?

I think the North Terrace is the most fantastic. It is 3058 meters high. It’s very cold on the North Terrace even in summer. Looking down from the mountain there is a  wonderland-like scenery with cloud floating across the forests. It was a very impressive experience that made me reluctant to go back.
