The New Palace of Panchen Guide

The New Palace of Panchen is one of the palace of the Tibetan Buddist leader the Panchen Lama. Situated to the south of the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the New Palace of Panchen was built in 1954 by the 10th Panchen Lama as his summer resort. The Chinese government donated funds for the construction of the New Palace of Panchen. Then the New Palace of Panchen became the residence of the Panchen. There are three gates along the central axis of the New Palace of Panchen. The eaves of the first gate is upheld by four octagonal red lacquer pillars.

The gate and its accessaries are decorated with raised coving of ferocious unruly beasts, dragons and various floral patterns on each side of the walls beside the gate. The various paintings are composed by auspecious cirrus, ferocious tigers, Chinese dragons, human figures and Buddhist murals. The paintings are really delicate and vivid. Passing through the first gate of the New Palace of Panchen, a deep path paved with beautiful gravels dotted by white mable floral patterns leads to the second gate. The second gate of the New Palace of Panchen is a Chinese traditional antecourt. Walking throught the antecourt there goes the third gate of the New Palace of Panchen.

After that, you will see the magnificent main building in the New Palace of Panchen, the residence of the Panchen including the Panchen Lama bedrooms, drawing rooms, sutra hall, Buddha hall and Buddhist Guardian Hall. The New Palace of Panchen houses a number of precious cultural relics. Among those, the most priceless one is a fresco named ‘Phakpa Meeting Kublai Khan’, discribing lama Chogyal Phakpa joining the court of Kublai Khan as imperial spiritual teacher in Yuan Dynasty.
