The Yamdrok Yumtso Lake, literally Swan Lake in Tibetan language, is one of the largest lakes in Tibet and one of three holy lakes in the Tibet region. The Yamdrok Yumtso Lake lies to the south of Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Shannan Region of Tibet. With an elevation of 4410 kilometers, the Yamdrok Yumtso Lake is 130 kilometers long from east to west and 70 kilometers wide from south to north, which makes the Yamdrok Yumtso Lake occupy an area of 638 square kilometers. The shoreline length of the Yamdrok Yumtso is 250 kilometers long and the depth ranges from 20 to 40 meters with

the deepest point as 60 meters. The surroundings of the lake are calm and peaceful and a great place to relax and enjoy the clear skies and fresh air of Tibet. The mountain divides the Yamdrok Yumtso Lake and the Yarlung Tsangpo River is the Lhagoi Kangri range. The Noijin Kangsang Peak, the summit of the Lhagoi Kangri Group, stands graciously beside the Yamdrok Yumtso Lake and it’s one of the four snow mountains in central Tibet. Do I get to see Yamdrok Yumtso on the way to Shigatse from Lhasa? Can we pull over and walk to the bank of Yamdrok Yumtso Lake?

Yes, actually we can drive along Yamdrok Yumtso on the way to Shigatse. You can both have a bird’s view of Yamdrok Yumtso on the top of the mountain but also go down to the lake on the bank.
