-Travel to Turpan

Turpan, located some 180 KM southeast of Urumqi in the east part of Xinjiang Province, is one of the few basin areas below the sea level in the world. The basin is a narrow, long stretch of land covering a total area of fifty thousand square kilometers, with Kurultag Mountain to the south and Bogda Mountain to the north. Besides the low altitude, another famous feature of the city is the scorching climate. The annual rainfall is only a mere 10 millimeters. it has long been known as "Fire State" or "Land of Fire" for its extreme summer heat.

However, the climate of the day and night varies a lot. The days are extraordinary hot and sunny, but the nights are breezy and cool. This special climate feature makes the fruits grow in abundance and the famous Hami melons, grapes and fruit trees are the special local products of the city. Turpan is most famous for its splendid grapes. Every household has a ventilated barn on the roof, and some of the world's finest grapes are produced here. More than a thousand tons of grapes are exported to other foreign countries each year, which provide a healthy profit for the positive economy of this area.

This relatively small and economically unimportant place has blossomed in recent years, attracting numerous travelers, who come here to sample the easy going pace of life and to see the desert. The Jiaohe Ruins, Gaochang Ruins, Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, Sugong Ta/Emin Minarets, Astana Tombs bear witness to the city's flourishing past.
