Jiaxiu Pavilion was built in the Ming Dynasty in the 26th year of Emperor Wanli's reign. An imperial inspector, Jiang Dongzhi, built the pavilion and named it Jiaxiu because he believed the people in Guiyang were the most talented in world. The building is 20 meters high and three stories with a pointed top that has several carved windows and red lattices on all sides. Some other buildings around the pavilion combine to form a harmonious scenic architectural complex, customarily known as "Eight Scenes of a Mini West Lake". The downstairs of the pavilion has a bridge, Floating Jade Bridge, that is located over the Hanbi pool.
It is a magnificent three-storied building 20-meter-high with three eaves and a pointed top, containing carved windows and red lattices and upturned eaves on all sides. Downstairs is the Floating Jade Bridge which spans both north and south banks. Under the bridge, the clear blue swirling water forms a pool named Hanbi. When night falls with all the lights on, the outline of the pavillion and the bridge are reflected in the river as if it were a fairtland.
When people visit the pavilion, they will be amazed at all of the woodworks, calligraphy, paintings and stone engravings done by the ancient artists. The most famous is a 206 character antithetical couplet, said to be the longest in the world, that was written by a member of the Imperial Academy from Guiyang during the Qing Dynasty, Liu Yushan. In this pavilion, tourists can have a look at the rich collection of stone engravings, calligrphy works, paintings and woodworks by ancient artists.
