The Gao Temple (Gao Miao) is an attractive travel site. It is located in Zhongwei, about 170km southwest of Yinchuan, originally built in the early of Ming Dynasty. Just like the name described, “Gao” means “High” in Chinese, the temple is high and steep. Flattened by an earthquake in 1739 AD, It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1942. Like the Hanging Monastery near Datong in Shanxi Province, the Gao Temple caters Mainly to the tree staple religions in China: Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. The temple, at present, is still mainly wooden in structure, beautifully

interweaved with tier upon tier and veranda under eave, presenting magnificent view.Since the temple caters 3 religions, inside the temple can be seen statues of the Holy Mother, Jade Emperor in Taoism, Gautama Buddha in Buddism, and Confucian in Confucianism. The caverns in the complex were used as a bomb shelter during the period of the Cultural Revolution and now depict pictures of a kind of Chinese religious hell. The temple is famous for its height. On the 4000 Square meters terrace, standing about 260 temple rooms and mostly made of wood. The

whole contracture can be divided into 2 parts. The second part is higher than the first part, looking like a flying bird. It is one of the must see attractions in Zhongwei. There are also the bell tower, drum tower, Wen tower, the Celestial palace and the side halls with repository Buddhist scriptures on both sides of the main construction of Gao Temple.
