Wudangzhao Guide

-Travel to Wudangzhao

Wudangzhao, a popular travel destination near Baotou, is the most well kept and also the largest Tibetan influenced lamasery in Inner Mongolia. It is situated on Jihuluntu Mountain 54 kilometers north of Baotou City. "Wudang" means willow and "Zhao" means monastery in Mongolian. "Wudangzhao" is the monastery built near willows. The lamasery is a group of traditional Tibetan architecture with white walls and flattened roofs, dotted about at the mountain slope of 1 mile long, covering an area of about 50 acres. Wudangzhao is composed of six halls for chanting Buddhist scriptures, three Living Buddha mansions, one mausoleum and multiple lama dormitories.

Besides for Buddhist activities and pilgrimage, Wudangzhao is a famous lecturing lamasery in Inner Mongolia. It has schooling for monks to learn sutras and study Buddhism. In its prime Wudangzhao had over 1200 resident monks, but these numbers have dwindled down to but a few, leaving the 2500 room complex active, but filled mainly by travellers and believers. Though the legion of local and foreign travellers that flood its grounds have a way of dampening its charm, Wudangzhao's 1500 Buddhist statues and abundant fine murals, which depict historical myths and beautiful landscapes, make it worth the travel.

Though the lamasery's spiritual mystique is somewhat diluted by its newfound function as a travel attraction, it is still a monument to Buddhism's far reaching influence on China's history and culture. The easiest way to get to the lamasery is to take a bus outside the Railway Station. And a number of buses will take you back before 5pm. Contact us if you want to travel to Wudangzhao lamasery.
