Zhaojun Tomb of Hohhot Guide

-Travel to Zhaojun Tomb of Hohhot

Zhaojun Tomb has been listed as one of top eight popular travel spots in Hohhot. It is located on the bank of Dahei River nine kilometers (5.6 miles) to the south of Hohhot. Zhaojun Tomb was built for Wang Zhaojun, one of four famous beauties of ancient China. The tomb covers an area of 1.3 hectares (76.6 acres) and stands 33 meters (108.3 feet) high. Legend has it that in autumn when the grasslands wither, those on Zhaojun Tomb still flourish. So the tomb is also called the Green Tomb. In front of the tomb there is a flat terrace on which the poem steles are built. Seen from a distance the tomb appears to be deep blue in color.

The tomb tells a moving story from some 2,000 years ago. Regarded as the one of the four most beautiful women in Chinese history, Wangzhaojun was once a female attendant in the Imperial Palace during the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 24 A.D.). Then she was arranged to get married with the king of the Huns - Huhanxie Chanyu, for he wanted to enhance the relationship with Han Court through marriage. Though the marriage was off Zhaojun’s own free will, she still brought the culture of Central China Plain to the Hun people and promote the exchanges between two cultures. Futurity then built this tomb in order to memorize her great contribution to tying up the friendship between Han and Hun.

Today, many Chinese are still moved by this story and come to visit. Recently, the tomb area has been developed to include cultural facilities and has now become one of the key cultural relics under the jurisdiction of Hohhot.
